Hero Equipment: Best sets to use

pilferediconOne of the questions on everyone’s mind in this game is what the best hero equipment/gear are for attacking, defending and campaigning. With a pretty constant stream of newly introduced gear with differing bonuses, it can be difficult to decide. So here is a small overview of the best sets currently available, below the fold, as the article has grown a bit longer than anticipated.

Note upfront: There is a lot of gear with random attributes, most notably the Void ring and amulet, and the Scorched gear. I try not to take this factor into account in my lists, as it is too difficult (impossible) to test every possible combination of random stats. Scorched gear for example will suck 99% of the time with its 4 random attributes. But what if you are extremely lucky and find a Scorched ring with 2x 4* Life debuffs to all. It would certainly be a lot better than Necro ring! But it will be so rare and so unpredictable to obtain, that I am leaving those instances out of these lists. Best example so far is finding good Void rings and amulets with proper debuffs for CHS. So just remember that these will be “Best sets” for 95% of players, but it is possible to get even better gear with extreme luck!

Update 03-2015

I have just finished an algorithm which checks the best gear combinations possible. It does this by checking every possible combination of gear from a database of possible gear items, and producing a list of these possible sets. With these lists it is possible to filter for max defense or offensive power. While previously the complete sets made it rather easy to figure out Best Sets, all the new and unique Legendary gear made it more and more difficult, so this program is really helping me out.

All the combinations given have all level VII Artamirs in either Ring and Shield (defense) or Weapon and Amulet (offense). Use the remaining slots/new Gems or your VIII Artamirs to close the difference between buff and debuff for the absolute best combinations. Also note that ALL level 1 Legendary’s random fourth attribute have been left out, so if you for example have a Black Arrow I with a good 4th stat, this will be better than the normal Arrow given here for offense. Good alternatives are given for both offensive and defensive gear.

Attacking:

  • Tauriel Bow II+ Smaug Scale II + Smaug Tooth II + Elrond Ring II + Necro
  • Weapon: Sm. Claw I/II, Tauriel B. I, Necro
  • Shield: Smaug Scale I, Bard’s BA I/II, Necro
  • Cloak: Bilbo Cl. I
  • Amulet: Necro
  • Ring: Necro, Elrond I, One Ring

Find the spreadsheet with gear combinations through THIS LINK

Defending/campaigning

  •  Orcrist II + Oakenshield II + Thorin’s Fur II + One Ring II + Repl.
  • Weapon: Beorn Axe, Repl., Void
  • Shield: Repl., Smaug Scale, Oakenshield
  • Cloak: Repl, Bard’s, Bilbo, Void
  • Amulet: Void, Bard’s
  • Ring: Bard’s, Repl., One Ring, Void

Specific set-ups

Please remember that the lists above are general guidelines. Other gear with good random attributes, such as Legendary I gear, Void and Scorched, can and will be better than what is stated above.

  1. I changed the one ring by bard ring and I improve my results attacking smaug but my CHS are still better using one ring (using same gems in both cases). The other equipment I use are orcrist I (with random 36.10% life debuff), oakenshield I (with random 36.10% attack debuff for t5) and the rest are reple. Any advice? Thank you in advance

  2. What about a combination of orchist 1 + oakenshield 1 and bards ring with the rest replenishment for defending? No more void pieces tho

  3. Hi, there’s some change in Defense hero equipement. Now the best set to use is to equip Thorin with Oeckenshield 1 + Orcrist 1 + Bard’s Rind + 1 replenishing and one Void or 2 replenishing.

    • Yeah, that’s what I was seeing in the tk on my world Saturday evening… people got them fast. The orcrist 1 with a great 4th stat (4* to life or atk debuff) is amazing… The combo with Thorin has got to be nuts, but almost no one has Thorin in my world.

Side note: Kabam posted all the Legendary Hero gear stats on the forums.

Great work on all you’ve done. Helps out loads.

For those folks wondering about the scorched ring. Here is what the attributes are:
    9.6 d-atk all t3 troops
    18.7 d-atk all troops
    36.1 d-atk all troops

Some ppl were able to get it in 250 rings and some much more. For myself I’ve not gotten it (opened 467 ring chest thus far).

    • I got one with those last two stats — it’s better than replenish on my setup because it’s debuff instead of buff. The other stats were load.

  5. Elrond’s Ring 1 is definitely a superb attack ring. The 4th slot is random but with 3 life debuffs to all and 1 life buff to a specific troop type makes it a killer.

    • The new legendary gear upgrades definitely throw a twist in. Might be interesting to see recommendations when that fourth random stat is exactly right.

The CHS potentials with inverse random stats (e.g. a life equivalent to void gear on an attack piece) are incredible, too.

The variety and differentiation available couldn’t be better.

  6. I continually test gear and surprising to me, bards ring worked better in campaign than the one ring. I tested them both with and without gems and bards ring continually came out ahead. I figure it works better because the lost debuff is offset with the level 7 gems. Anyone else tested this?

    • Indeed this is the case. Bard’s Ring has out performed TOR in almost every map. 2 exceptions I think. It has been my CHS ring of choice until I began digging into my Smaug Scorched Rings and found a keeper.

  8. You mention there are specific random void rings that are good out there. Which would be a “good” void ring? Can someone who has one or knows of one give me an example?

I am using one that has an 18.7% and 36.1% (total -54.8% foe attack) This ring works on tier 1,2 and 3 mounted for the debuff. I chose this because smaug has t3 troops. (original ring 2% Life, 1% Load, 4% -atk, 8% -atk).
Is this the best random attribute void ring set up ? or is their a better void ring for campaign?

I have the One Ring. Would the One Ring be better than this void ring? I use Beorn’s axe, Rep. Shield, Rep. Necklace, Void ring above and cloak of the void.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the missunderstanding and congratulations for this great blog

        • If you are using Beorn’s Axe you should use Beorn so you get the bonus from the gear, if you are using a Bard’s Arrow with life buff to all troops or attack debuff to all troops you should use Bard, if using Oakenshield then use Thorin, and for other gear you can attack from any city with any hero. Just choose the one with the highest city buffs for other gear. For the specialized gear I mentioned, you will need to test on correct hero and hero from city with 10/10 buffs if different to see which one gives higher scores. All I can say for sure is that Bard’s Arrow with Atrack debuff works better on Bard with only 3/4 city buffs than it does on a hero in my city with 10/10 city buffs.

  12. Wouldn’t Cursed Watcher’s gear be better than Ent gear when defending? It’s easier to acquire (from mines) and provides life to T3, T4, T5 and -foe atk to all when fully enhanced in numbers greater than what the Ent gear provides. Base is the same when fully enhanced, atk will be higher on the cursed watcher’s.

Bard’s coat for defending/campaigning is huge, too. Check into that.

Finally, some servers don’t have Void, Necromantic, Replenishing, or other such gear available and it’s been known to be removed if it accidentally shows up.

If you happen to get a Bard’s Arrow I with the random attribute 8% attack debuff to all troops the best CHS combo then becomes Replenishing Sword, Bard’s Black Arrow I, The Peak, Mark of the Void, and The Well. Using that combo on Bard, due to +600 life bonus Bard gets when equipped with BA1, my scores jumped 10’s of millions even though C5 city buffs are only 2/4. I did many, many tests with swapping Beorn’s Axe, Replen, Void, and Necro in for other pieces and the above is the best if you happen to be one of the lucky few that get that random bonus for BA1.

      • yep. i’m sure. hit every map multiple times with each sword to ensure i had the optimum numbers for each. most maps were identical but there were a couple that replenishing was better and none that Beorn was better. That was with my BA1 that has the 8% base attack debuff though. That changed quite a bit because of also getting better score now with only 1 void piece instead of 2. Guessing it was that whole diminishing returns thing you discussed in a different article that required the large gear changes once I acquired this BA1. Only one like it I’ve seen on my server.

Testing I did without the BA1 confirmed what you found. When using normal replen / void combo Beorn Axe is slightly better for CHS just like it is on defense.

However, if you get a Bards Arrow 1 with the random 4th attribute of 8% Attack Debuff (36% when maxed) then my gear combo beats it hands down.

My total score on 2nd page of maps in Along the Shore is 55,644,327 using the BA1 I said and the rest of the gear in my original comment. That is without maxed attack buff and without maxed city buffs as well. I think 55mil is more than the 49mil you got. 😉

                  • I ran some more tests and got the same results. Along the shore 2.3 tested.

                    Test 1:
Using Beorn in C4 with 10/10 city buffs and 242 attack buff 247 life buff. Gear is Beorn Axe with Replenishing cloak and shield and Void ring and neck. Score was ~9.37mil.

                    Test 2:
Using Bard in C5 with 2/4 city buffs, same attack and life buff. Gear is Black Arrow I with 36% attack debuff, Replenishing sword and neck, Void ring. Score was ~10.05mil.

Gem setup was same for both tests. 4 level 6 gems on sword, cloak, neck, and shield. 4 level 7 gems on ring.

So again, if you are lucky enough to get BA1 with 36% attack debuff use it on Bard. Even with less city buffs the score is still higher due to Bard getting +600 life bonus from using BA1.

        • You’re welcome. I don’t understand either unless the reason is what Beardmonkey posted before about diminishing returns. With BA1 the vitality score might be high enough that the extra attack of replenishing helps more than extra life of beorn axe by improving efficiency part of the score.

  14. The One Ring is the best Ring only for specific campaign’s maps. It is better than Void ring (2% more life than Void).I f you have a Void Ring or Scorched Ring with a second attack debuff, for example, to all t3, they would be The best Ring in some maps as Smaug and Mória.

  17. Hi there! Just the best website about Hobbit KOM ever.

Just a doubt, in the paragraph below:

Second place is for full Replenish or Void sets as far as I can tell. They offer the best defensive debuffs and base stats. But beware, only the Void Sword, Amulet, Cloak and Ring of the Void are defensive, Shield is for offense! Other options for second best are the Smaug Claw and Oakenshield. By themselves they are great pieces of gear but beware, if you are wearing full Replenish, it is BETTER to mix in Void, as the Claw and Oakenshield have the same +life bonus as Replenish.

Did you get the intention to sau Smaug Scale, in the place of Smaug Claw?
    Thanks and once again, congrats!

  18. I noticed that you put the void shield in the third rank of attack gear, but it is actually better than mystic kings gear. Because mystic kings gear attributes start at 1%/2%/4% debluff life (at level 10 that equals 33.30 %), while the void shield has one 8% debluff life (at level 10 that equals 36.10%). I know that isn’t a lot, but it also is way, way better than replenishing arms gear for attacking (only 14.6% at level 10). To quickly prove my point necromantic and replenishing gear’s attributes start at 1%/2%/4%/8%. If you have one of those up to level 10, all you need to do is add the first 3 together to get what level 10 mystic kings gear gets, and then the last one is what void shield gets. Well thanks for listening and absolutely awesome wed-site by the way, it is by far the best source of information on KoM that I’ve ever found.

    • Great website, here is a gear question that came up recently. If mixing void with replen works the best than why not mix 2 necro pieces instead of void? Better debuffs so you would think it would produce better defense ratios?

      Like

      • The reason void is the best because void at level 10 has a 36.10% debluff attack. While necro has only 14.60% debluff attack, it does have 54.80% debluff life, but that is a attack attribute, not defense. Now from what I know debluff life is not useful in a defense setup. I might be wrong though so if someone knows better feel free to tell me that I’m an idoit or whatever.

  19. When it comes to CHS the priority is to minimize your losses. The fewer troops you send the better. However, reducing troops sent by 1 does not compare to reducing losses by 1 with regard to score. So when it comes to gem embedding and you (likely) do not have enough gems for every slot, you must prioritize debuffing their attack and buffing YOUR health. This is minimizes your losses thus increasing your score DRAMATICALLY. The same holds true in defending your city. The attacker is GOING to die, so you want to minimize the damage done. This equals better ratios.
The opposite holds true when attacking. Your troops ARE going to die. So while they are still swinging a sword you want to put your gems where they will decrease the enemy’s life and increase your attack.
When you get more gems you can fill the other spots for their bonuses which DO help but not as dramatically as the order mentioned. Spenders can fill every slot if they choose to spend. The rest of us need to get the most out of what we have.
IMHO, the cape is the last priority to embed. I personally do not waste gems there as troop size is not a priority for my ply style.

Ive heard straight replenish is better. Ive heard replenish with void cloak, or with sword and cloak, or ring and amulet.. i know that the amulet and ring sometimes have different attributes so does this help or hurt defending? TIA..

    Like

    • AFAIK, there is no difference between campaign defense and PvP defense. Defense is defense, with limiting troop loss being (almost always) the main goal.

The standard solution is simply 3 replenish 2 void. I usually use the sword and cloak, but some items like the ring can have debuffs for T1 for their random attributes, making them slightly better than other versions.

But these versions are rare, so for all intents and purposes, 3 replenish/2 void with the best Gems in the defensive slots of gear works best for most situations.

I have a question. Based on a previous comment you stated that a mix of replenishing and void is better than a full set of replenishing due to life buffs becoming less effective at higher numbers. My question is, does that apply only for campaign or it applies for defending purposes also?, in your post you state it is for defense/campaing, but following what you explained in other posts about battle mechanics, I am not completly sure.

Also, in any type of normal troop life is double of the attack, if that is so, a 30% life buff should be better for defending than a 30% foe attack debuff. Perhaps I am a little lost in the numbers yet, can you explain a little more in depth about all this?

    Thank you

    • In defending, I think it depends on the opposing hero. If you are being attacked with full necro gear for -250% life, then I would think the diminishing returns on increasing life don’t come in to play to the same extent. But if he is instead buffing attack, it may be a different calculation.

    • Ooh man, difficult to answer because I have no clue in what kind of server or allaince you are, or what your might is, but in principal:

You start with the trader gear and other shit gear from armor scraps, easy to farm for a little might lost. Next you can hit Smaug. This will take more might, but like I said, I have no idea if you can spare it. Hit Smaug repeatedly for the Prisoner and Pilfered set, of which Pilfered used to be the best set in game, but no more.

With Pilfered you have a decent set. Definitely not TK worthy or anything, but a start. Now, to obtain other sets, there are a few possibilities.

-Join in tournaments (single/alli) They regularly give out gear and is the single fastest method of getting new sets after introduction.

-Premium sale or Wheel of Fate. Safe tokens and spend them in premium, gives out a lot of gear. Wheel CAN do the same but not guaranteed. Wheel also needs some spending to be done properly, and you can also buy extra tokens of course for Galadriel

-Special Sage tower trades. Bit more rare and materials usually come from wheel/premium

-Temporary campaign maps. Always drop one or another gear set, and usually one item from a newly introduced set. Takes some might, but perhaps worth it if you dont have anything.

In short, just playing the game will eventually give you gear, dont worry, through whatever option. If you want to stay ahead of the rest and have the newest bestest sets very quickly, spending or being in a very good alliance is necessary

      • He’s right. A mix of 3 replenishing with void sword and cloak give higher campaign scores than full replenishing. My best guess would be that at higher percentages you get diminishing returns. That would explain why a mix of life buff and attack debuff outperform all life buff.

Another interesting note on campaign gear. On some of the maps high score is actually achieved with 2 replenishing, void sword and cloak, and necro amulet. For the same reason as above I’m thinking. Law of dimminishing returns. Once the vitality portion of your score reaches a certain point your score can be increased more by raising efficiency than by raising vitality. We have several people closing in on 300mil campaign scores and all use this same strategy. Void sword and cloak with rest replenishing for majority of the maps and void sword and cloak, necro ammy, and rest replenishing for other maps. It takes some testing to figure out which maps are which, but run throught all of them with each set of gear and you’ll see which is which.

One more tip, the high score for bosses on some of the maps is actually achieved thru multiple attacks since troops killed carry over to next attack. Try last high pass boss as an example. Drop the bosses life to about half of starting value and then send rangers and giants to kill remaining. If done right, your score will be a lot higher than by killing everything in first attack. On some boss maps, the score by doing it this way might be over 1 million points higher than by killing in first hit.

  32. Hi, I love your website. Very informative. I have a question. I have recently upgraded to full replenishing gear and have increased my hero buff considerably. But I can’t even beat my old score in campaign. Any suggestion?

    • What did you use before in terms of gear? Seems a bit incredible. I marched with full 122k armies and STILL beat my old high scores…

ONLY thing I can think of is that the debuffs arent activated properly on your server yet. I seem to remember that shortly after Void gear was introduced, the debuffs didnt work properly on all servers, so it performed better than Ent. Then they activated it and it worked much much better….
